There are millions of slaves in the world today many of whom, both young men and women, who are sold for sex. This should not surprise us. History so far has always had its slaves. Ancient Rome was built on slavery and many were sold into sexual slavery of both sexes. It was accepted by the cultural norms of that society as the brothel in Pompeii illustrates. Ancient historical literature has much to say about sexual slaves, particularly the Jewish Old Testament. A good example of this is to be found in the book of Joel in the Old Testament chapter 3 verse 3, where the prophet is looking forward to a time when all the nations on earth will be punished for the way they have treated the Jews. Joel cites as particularly evil the way that the victors, traded captured Jewish boys as male prostitutes, and exchanged Jewish girls for a skin of wine. What a wealth of human suffering is held in that small verse! It was however the eventual recognition by the Christian faith that God valued all human life as equally important that led to the final collapse of the historic slave trade.
Millions however are suffering just as the early Jewish children suffered as they are taken from their homes and made to work as sexual slaves in conditions uncannily similar to the brothels of Pompeii. To say that the experience is traumatic is a gross understatement.
