Do the Poor Feel Pain?

There is an unconscious, underlying assumption among the middle classes in the wealthy west, that the poor don’t feel pain.  We hear that so many children die from poverty each year in the third world that we somehow feel that they must get used to it. For us, the death of one child is a disaster, particularly if that child dies in violent circumstances.  Then the news is all over the media. In addition if one child goes missing that is banner headlines until the child is found.  On these occasions mothers and fathers go through agonies along with thousands of other strangers, who leave flowers at disaster sites and hold vigils.

However the mothers and fathers of the poor in the third world, go through just the same agonies when their children are in pain for which there is no relief.  Also when their children go missing they suffer in exactly the same way as those of us who live in more privileged places.  The difference is that nobody much cares about their pain. It is an everyday occurrence.

If you would like to read a book about a girl who disappeared and who was eventually found and rescued, then please read ‘The Garden of Sparkling Delight,’ by Deborah Varen.  This exciting and gripping story tells the tale of a young Brazilian girl who is tricked into sexual slavery.  This is a common occurrence even in the wealthy west.

The novel seeks to raise the awareness that children who are taken like this, suffer untold pain, not only physical but also mental and in addition their mothers, fathers and siblings also suffer.  Even if such girls are rescued they are never the same and their parents will bear the scars of their loss for the rest of their lives.  Please read it or listen to it, and join my campaign against this evil.  The book can be listened to for free, from this site or You Tube, or read on Kindle or paperback from Amazon. The audio version is FREE.
