Have you bought prince Harry’s book I wonder? I have not but I have watched a brief snippet on TV talking about experiences of war in Afghanistan and an image of the prince in his helicopter shooting in combat. What horrified me about this was the casual attitude to the 25 Taliban fighters that were killed in action. This highly mechanised form of warfare that we have can seem to be some sort of video war game and a far cry from the cut and thrust of medieval warfare where your opponent was actually there in front of you. In modern warfare enemy soldiers can cease to exist as real human beings and can become non human: mere pixels on a screen to eliminate.
It's exactly the same with sex workers and sex slaves. They too have become numbers on lists for government departments to quantify and present to select committees. We too can hear the term ‘sex slave,’ and unconsciously relegate these girls and boys to some sort of subset of the human race. Had we been able to talk about Clare, and Tracey, Linda and Robyn, we should suddenly become passionately engaged in their plight.
The problem of seeing sex slaves as real people is very real. However if you read or listen to the novel ‘The Garden of Sparkling Delight,’ by Deborah Varen [available in paperback and on Kindle from Amazon or free as a downloadable audio book from this site or listen on You Tube,] suddenly you will realise that they are real people too like you and me, with feelings and futures and personality. Please try and do this. It will open your eyes to a whole new world.
Please recommend 'The Garden of Sparkling Delight' to your friends. Reviews would be much appreciated. Thank you so much.
