I have just finished watching the older version of the film ‘The Equalizer.’
For my money it is better than the latest version which is a little too slick. In this older version the hero, befriends a prostitute and encourages her to stand up to her pimp and break free from him. For her pains she is severely beaten and ends up in the emergency room. There the hero meets her friend and fellow prostitute and asks the question ‘why was she beaten so severely?’ The friend replies that it was to teach her a lesson that she can never break free from her slavery to this man. The pimp had also told her that the next time the girl rebels her throat will be cut so that she will be dumb. He then remarks ‘punters love a dumb whore.’ In the film of course everything turns out wonderfully well as our hero, with his supernatural fighting ability, kills both the owner and his violent henchmen and the girl goes off into the sunset to start a new wonderful life.
However real life is not like that and there are no heroes to rescue modern captive sex slaves. The only heroes there are in fact, are ordinary people like you and me who campaign on their behalf either through our support of specific charities set up to help, or who try to raise awareness of the immense cost to young lives of this evil industry.
That is why I wrote the book ‘The Garden of Sparkling Delight,’ in an attempt to show the effects on one young girl caught up in the sex trade. Please read it and pass it on to your friends.
