I was fascinated recently when I attended a wedding to have my gaze drawn towards the bride’s nails which were bright green. She had obviously gone to a great deal of trouble to get them looking nice for her husband to be.
Contrast this with the bright red nails of a sex slave seen in a recent documentary. What a contrast the two colours were. However the contrast didn’t lie only in the colour but in the reasons for the nails to be painted in the first place : the bride wanted her appearance to be as beautiful as possible because she loved her husband to be and wanted to please him, whereas the prostitute had been ordered to beautify herself in order to attract the punters. One decorated herself as an act of love, the other to further engage the lust of her clients.
This reminded me of an extracts from the novel ‘The Garden of Sparkling Delight,’ by Deborah Varen. In chapter 6 the heroine, Tis, who has been tricked into a brothel to work, as she thinks, as a domestic is cleaning up in the kitchen. She has only ever been in the kitchen, but suddenly the door from the dining room ‘ burst open and … three girls came in from the hallway. They were laughing together but stopped as soon as they saw Tis, and stared at her curiously.
Tis noticed that all three had their faces painted with bright lipstick and dark eye shadow…..One of the girls gave a start… she stood quite still .. and let out an anguished cry, ‘Oh no!. Not you too Tis.’
The novel tells the story of an imaginary sexual slave and her experiences. It is exciting and fast paced and will grip you to the last page. Please read it or listen for FREE to the whole story and find out what happens to the main character 'Tis' her family snd friends. You can use this link to the audio, The Podcast or go to the links at the top of this WEB page and select 'Tis The Podcast'. There you will find access to the 21 half hours episodes to listen on-line or download for later listening and sharing.
If you read or listen to this novel you will see the stark contrast worked out between what is done for love and what is done to decorate women’s bodies so that they become more saleable merchandise. The former is represented by an English nurse and the latter by a young, poor Brazilian girl called Tis. The story is a novel of protest and it is available from Amazon in paperback and on the Kindle e-reader. Royalties from Amazon sales go to charities supporting victims.
Please recommend The Garden of Sparkling Delight to your friends. Reviews would be much appreciated.
Thank you so much.
