I don’t usually bother as most resolutions usually don’t last long. But maybe you have decided to have a dry January, or not to lose you temper so much, or to eat less chocolate or some such.
How about making a different sort of resolution today? Were I to make a resolution it would be this: to work as hard as I can to raise the awareness of the dreadful obscenity in our society that is modern day slavery especially sexual slavery. Modern slavery is alive and very well indeed. To listen to the continuing outcry against historic slavery one would be forgiven for thinking that it was all over and that it had gone away for good.
This has come to the fore during the first week of January when it was established that the folk who threw Mr Colston’s statue into the UK city of Bristol's harbour because he was a slave trader, were perfectly within their rights to damage property if they didn’t agree with the philosophy of the person concerned. That just shows how much we, as a country have got side tracked with historic slavery. No, it’s the slavery that is going on now that should make us angry enough to hurl statues around! And just as each person in the UK in the time of Mr Colston was also culpable of endorsing the slave trade by eating the cheap sugar that the slaves produced, so we are equally guilty every time we buy super cheap clothes, have our cars washed in a car wash staffed by slaves or nails painted in a nail bar with slaves as the operatives.
Please join me in making this New Year’s resolution so that our corporate anger can at last change the fate of each modern day slave.
I have written a novel about the subject please and invite you to read or listen to the novel and pass it on to your friends. It can be listened to and downloaded free of charge as an audio book from this site. To listen for FREE to the whole story by Deborah Varen and find out what happens to the main character 'Tis' her family snd friends you can use this link to The Podcast or go to the links at the top of this WEB page and select 'Tis The Podcast'.
