The dustmen in my area have had a job clearing all the Christmas rubbish away. So much so, that when I went for a short walk yesterday afternoon I had to look at a great pile of transparent paper sacks on each driveway. After a while I began to be fascinated with what was in the bags. Firstly there were lots of empty food packages, milk cartons and the like. I also saw more than one huge brown box that had obviously housed a gigantic TV. Then there was the even larger box that had wrapped a child’s cot and the container where a little girl’s play kitchen had resided. All these bags spoke of families that had had an enjoyable Christmas where they had eaten well, had lots of presents and spent much time watching the TV. But the bags also represented all those things that we buy, use and then throw away.
But how would it have been if instead of piles of plastic sacks full of ephemeral rubbish outside each house I had seen mounds of modern day slaves, their dead bodies bundled into black body bags and just dumped for the dustman to come and take them away too?
‘But,’ you may say, ‘ there is no parallel between my fun Christmas rubbish and these people?’ But yes there is for just as our televisions, cheap clothes, cots and food are all commodities that we buy and then discard so are these young men and women. They too are things, that are bought and sold and are of no more account than a bottle of milk or a child’s play kitchen. The trouble is that this nameless human rubbish doesn’t seem real to us.
If that is the case, please read ‘The Garden of Sparkling Delight.’ This is a novel I wrote to try and put a real face onto modern sexual slavery. The novel can be purchased from Amazon in paperback and the Amazon Kindle. All proceeds are ploughed back into charities who work in this area.
You can listen and downloaded free of charge the novel as an audio book from this site.
