Lucky Lucky Lizard

I am writing this just before Christmas 2021 when we in the UK are waiting with bated breath to find out whether we are going to be allowed to meet with our families this Christmas or whether we shall be locked down for Covid.  Being able to meet with family for celebrations is such a precious thing.

Celebrating Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, new babies and the like, is not much fun by oneself. However, its one thing for Covid to stop us doing these things but to be forcibly restrained from celebrating these important occasions with our loved ones is another thing altogether.

In the novel ‘The Garden of Sparkling Delight,’ by Deborah Varen, the heroine is a sexual slave in Brazil who has been tricked into captivity in a brothel.  On one occasion she watches a lizard in the corner of her prison.  This is what she thinks:

“‘Lucky lucky lizard’ she murmured. ‘You’re free and I’m a prisoner……………………If I were a lizard, I would run and run away from this hateful city straight back home.

They're I’d live in a crack in the wall and gaze at my beloved family.   Each day I would creep out and just watch them.  Being in the same room would be enough.’

At the thought of her parents and brother Davi, her eyes filled with tears, and lips began to tremble.  Hastily she brushed them away and resumed her plastic smile, but her mind was far away and her heart was a cold as ice.’”

The novel was written to enable us all to enter into the experience of what sexual slavery feels like.
