It earns its entrepreneurs millions every year: far more than some of the largest corporations in the world. However there is another cost and that is to the relatives and friends, the mothers, fathers and siblings of the victims. Their lives are haunted by what has happened to the children that they love.
Available from Amazon is a novel that deals with this subject. ‘The Garden of Sparkling Delight’ by Deborah Varen. Towards the end of the story, the mother of the trafficked girl eventually hears what has happened to the beloved daughter she thought had gone to do domestic service in the city. For months she has been trying to find out the truth and the whole family have been desolated by the fact that she has apparently completely disappeared. Eventually the girl’s best friend escapes from the brothel and brings them the news they have been waiting for.
The girl’s father, accompanied by their friend, sets off to rescue her. After seeing them off, the mother turns back into the house to continue with her piece-work job of threading beads. This is what she says.
“‘What if something dreadful happens to them too?’ she said fearfully to herself. ‘Then I’d be on my own.’”
Slowly she made her way back inside the house, put the baby to sleep on the bed and sat at the table to thread beads. One by one they clicked into place on the string. The sun was already shining brightly and some of the beads seemed to sparkle as her deft fingers formed the gaudy pattern of the necklace. However it wasn’t the sunlight that caused the beads to glisten, but the tears that trickled down Ana’s face and spilled over them, as she thought of her beloved daughter in a brothel’.
