Sarah Everard and Wayne Couzens

The recent sentencing in a British court of Wayne Couzens, convicted of the murderer of Sarah Everard, draws a line under the story of this horrendous killing for most of us.  Mr Couzens will spend the rest of his life in prison reflecting, we hope, on the enormity of his crime.  However for Sarah’s family this is not the end but the beginning of a profoundly altered life.  Mr and Mrs Everard both spoke in court outlining their grief.  Mrs Everard said this, ‘I am tormented at the thought of what she [Sarah] endured, I play it out in my mind.’

Anyone in the same position would go over again and again what they imagined would have happened had it been their daughter, and not Sarah, caught up in this evil act.  There can be no relief for this for even when Mrs Everard closes her eyes to sleep, she will still see the images of her daughter being abused and then killed and burnt.  Darkness cannot blot out these terrible thoughts.

Have you ever thought though, that millions of loving mothers worldwide, whose daughters have been tricked into a life of sexual slavery, will be going through exactly the same sort of agony?  In the ‘not for profit’ novel of protest, ‘The Garden of Sparkling Delight,’ by Deborah Varen, you will find a study not only in how the slave feels in this situation, but also just how it impacts on her family and friends.  Evil deeds are never confined to victims.

The ripples go out through their immediate family and on until they reach you and me.  We too must try to see how we might feel if our daughters were caught up in this barbaric trade and try to do something to stop it. There are suggestions of what you might do at the end of the paperback copy.
