Spiking

There’s been a lot in the UK media lately about the spiking of young women in night clubs either by drugs slipped into their drinks, or by the use of a needle. This seems to be a problem that has recently come to public attention and like any new problem, it comes along with a general lack of awareness that it is going on. For anything to be done about it, it has to be taken seriously.  One recent comment on the issue came from Times Radio where it was reported,

To tackle spiking you need to work out the true scale of the problem and put in place measures to fix it.’

Sounds easy but I’m sure it’s not as easy as that.  The same is true of the relatively new phenomena of sexual slavery worldwide.  There are two things that this problem battles against.  The first is the media’s fixation on historic slavery and how it impacts the descendants of those affected by it, and the second that it is totally hidden from view.  To help bring the problem out into the light in all its terrible detail, I have written a novel called ‘The Garden of Sparkling Delight.’  This follows a young girl as she is tricked into imprisonment in a brothel and describes what happens to her and how it impacts on her health both mental and physical.  It is a story of horror but also of heroism as her friends try to free her.  On one level it is an exciting story, but on another it takes the lid of the title, ‘sexual slave,’ and shows what this really means in actual lives.
