Are We Civilized?

An ancient wise man of the 8th century BC once wrote, ‘speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.  Speak up and judge fairly: defend the rights of the  poor and needy.’

‘Destitution,’ is a word hardly used these days in our affluent society.  In the time of Dickens it was a common state and referred to people who were so poor they did not have the means of putting food on the table or a roof over their heads.  Those who had no income or means of support.

Most people, even those who consider themselves to be poor, in modern UK have no concept of what destitution is.  However there are many places in the world where families are destitute and where the pressure for marketable girls to go and work in brothels or on the streets just to put food on the table is intense.  Such girls are constantly being exploited and many are  bought and sold to make money for their owners.  These women did not choose to sell themselves for sex. It was the direct result of their destitution.

(poverty so extreme that you lack the means to provide for yourself)

This remains one of the favourite  ways in which the modern sexual slave trade operates.  If you would like a taste of how this works then read the novel, ‘The Garden of Sparkling Delight,’ by Deborah Varen, obtainable as a free audio download from this site.  Also available on You Tube and in paperback and on Kindle from Amazon.

I’m sure this book will give you a tremendous sympathy with the destitute. Perhaps you will join the crusade against the modern sex slave trade.  You will find the novel an exciting and hard hitting read that will make you sad and happy by turns, and bring to life the cold statistics which we use to describe the sex slave trade.  Until we rid our countries from this heinous practice, we cannot really call ourselves ‘civilised.’
