What makes a duchess cry? That’s a very strange question and one I’ve never asked myself before! Maybe they cry when they can’t afford to keep up their stately home any longer and have to sell it. Or perhaps when they accidentally put there tiara into the recycling bin just before dustbin day.
We do, however know that makes one duchess cry – The Duchess of Edinburgh. She is the wife of the king’s youngest brother Edward. Her name is Sophie and just recently she went on a tour of Chad where there is a vicious civil war raging. During the course of this war, many many women and girls have been raped as part of the modern trend in intimidating the enemy by terrorising the women in the community. Sophie sat down with some of these abused young women, some only children, and heard firsthand they're horrific stories of rape and violence. When she came away from the tent in which the interview had been conducted, those outside could see the tears running down her cheeks.
However it’s not just women in war torn areas who are so treated but in many peaceful more developed countries like the UK where women are systematically sexually abused when they find themselves trapped in sexual slavery. Their experiences would move us to tears in a similar way if only we knew about it. If you would like to enter into one such experience, please read the novel, ‘The Garden of Sparkling Delight,’ by Deborah Varen. There you will find, told as an exciting story, the life one such sexual slave is forced to lead and the impact this has on her health and mental well being.
The novel was written to highlight this dreadful problem and to help people see these woman and boys as real people, not just statistics on a computer screen.
