How Do You Make Your Money?

How do you make your money?  Most of you who are reading this blog will get up in the morning, go to some sort of work and then come home in the evening to enjoy a rest before the whole routine repeats itself. Some of that money, if we earn enough we will save, and some will go on the business of keeping alive and maintaining a roof over our heads. 

Not everybody makes their money in this way however.  

A TV investigation into the doings of one sex trafficker revealed that over the years he had made millions out of trafficking and exploiting young girls. These poor young women, mostly from the former Eastern Block, were promised a good life in the UK but on arrival discovered that they were to be prostitutes for the foreseeable future. 

While they plied their trade in virtual imprisonment, their owner lounged in his luxury house enjoying all the benefits that come with wealth. This is the fate of most sexual slaves. Their owners make more or less money out of them depending on how many slaves they own, and their situation. 

The novel ‘The Garden of Sparkling Delight,’ by Deborah Varen seeks to take the lid off this trade and reveal the misery that lies behind the trade in bodies that makes others so rich while those exploited stay so poor. The story concerns a young Brazilian girl tricked into sexual slavery.  It shows the impact this has on her and her family and friends. 

Woven into the novel is another story concerning the young life of an English doctor and his wife. Fortunately this part of the book tells a basically happy story which balances the darkness of the main heroine.
