Memories

 

What is your happiest memory? For most of us that’s an easy question. 

I guess a good few will cite their wedding day, or the day they achieved some goal they were striving for and will remember these events with gladness.  However if the opposite question were asked : ‘what is your worst memory,’ I guess your face would cloud over and a sad or angry expression would appear on your face.  Maybe even, you would be like the lady who told me the other day about the time her marriage broke up. The memory of this was so painful that even after 30 years she had difficulty fighting back the tears. These are the memories that we would much rather forget. I expect that for many of us, we can live with these bad memories however and that most of the time we don’t give them a second thought. However if we had become trafficked as a sex slave, it is doubtful whether we would ever forget the horror of those months or years, if, that is, we were fortunate to escape. 

One young woman in the US who was asked after she escaped her captors how she dealt with the memory of that time said that if she lived to be a hundred years old she would never be able to forget the details of her exploitation. In fact she went so far as to add that she would still remember them after she died, the experience had been so terrible.
