Lark Rise in the Corn Fields

It’s a warm July afternoon and I have just been for a walk in the cornfields behind our house.

As I walked I thought how fortunate I was to live so close to the great expanses of the outdoors that mean escape and a recharging of batteries.  I thought of the larks which sing endlessly over the fields in the Springtime and early Summer. I noticed the ripening black berries and the gossamer thistledown caught in the spider’s web.  There were the butterflies flitting among the willow herb and the delicate, fluted pink and white lesser bindweed climbing up the wheat stalks.  All this beauty and uplift came with the simple act of walking in the fields which nobody said I couldn’t do.

What a contrast to the life of the heroine of the novel ‘The Garden of Sparkling Delight,’ by Deborah Varen.  They're the young Brazilian girl is imprisoned in a brothel.  The room in which she sleeps with other prostitutes, has one barred window from which a distant glimpse of the sea can be seen, but she is never allowed to go there.  Her only change of scenery consists of going down the stairs either to her meals or to service the steady stream of men who come to pay for access to her body.  And there are millions of girls, and boys in the same imprisonment as I write.  Some are actually locked up as is the girl in the novel, others are held in the vice like grip of debt and threats which is as strong as any lock.

If you would like to find out what happens to the girl and the other characters in the story please either listen to the free audio version of the book which can be found on this website or on YouTube, or buy the paperback book or the Kindle edition from Amazon.

All profits go to helping stamp out this evil.
