An horrendous report reached the media last week regarding a young British girl from the UK city of Hull who from the age of 13 was sold into the sex trade in that city for the next three years of her life.
Eventually she was able to escape but her experience during those years was terrible. Over the course of that time she was forced to have sex with at least 150 different men usually at the rate of 10 or 11 each day. To keep her subservient, she was sometimes handcuffed. Frequently she was intimidated with physical violence with among other things, a hammer and a Taser. Threats were also made to keep her subservient, including fact that if she didn’t cooperated she would be burnt alive. That this could happen even in the UK, is a shock too many.
Often we ask ourselves why sex slaves in our law abiding country don’t immediately go to the police but given this girl’s experience it is easy to see why. Faced with this level of physical intimidation and the dreadful nature of the threats against her she feared for her life if she tried to escape. Try to imagine what she went through.
If you find this difficult, why not read the novel ‘The Garden of Sparkling Delight,’ by Deborah Varen and you will begin to understand a little of the feelings this poor child felt during her three year long ordeal. And of course now she has escaped, the fear of reprisals will haunt her for the rest of her life.
