Sharing Consciousness

Here is a short extract from the novel ‘The Garden of Sparkling Delight,’ by Deborah Varen.

‘What’s the matter?’ he enquired raising his voice above the level of the music and the chatter of the other passengers on the bus. Yara looked at him frowning. ‘We’ll soon be at Guilherme’s village,’ she replied. ‘What if he gets on?’ Carlos smiled a grim smile, and lifted his fist , waving it near his face.  ‘It would be a pleasure to meet that rat. I hope he does,’ he said fiercely.  Seeing that his words had put her mind at rest he sat back in his seat and went to sleep, only waking when they drew into the bus station in Beleza.”

A few months ago I was listening to a programme on the BBC and a sentence jumped out at me .  The presenter said, ‘Books invite you to share the consciousness of another person.’ The above novel does just that. The girl on the bus is a young Brazilian called Yara who has been caught and used as a sex slave by Guilherme, but has escaped. She is now returning to rescue her friend who is imprisoned in the local town in a brothel.  As the reader reads her story and the description of what she suffered day by day, they share the consciousness of Yara and begin to understand her feelings as she is abused on a daily basis. We can never entirely put ourselves into another person’s mind but through books we can come as near to it as is humanely possible. It is only then that we are motivated to try and alter their plight and the plight of those 30million plus  slaves in our world today and there is a lot you can do.
